Tanzania’s state-owned petroleum company TPDC and TAQA Arabia have signed an agreement to develop a small-scale LNG project to supply industrial, residential and transport customers across the country.
The project, announced in Dar es Salaam, is expected to begin operations in 2027, subject to a final investment decision.
TPDC will supply the gas, while TAQA Arabia’s subsidiary Rosetta Energy Solutions will help develop and operate the facility. LNG will be transported by road to customers beyond Tanzania’s existing pipeline network.
The partners have not disclosed the investment value, although earlier reports estimated the project at more than $100m.
The development is aimed at expanding domestic access to Tanzania’s large gas reserves, estimated at 57.5 trillion cubic feet, while supporting industry and transport.
It is separate from Tanzania’s proposed $42bn LNG export project in Lindi, which is focused on international markets.
