The South African government is set to provide an update on the rollout of the R500 million Spaza Shop Support Fund amid concerns over how applications are being verified and whether the money is reaching eligible businesses.
Small Business Development Minister Stella Ndabeni is expected to address the concerns on Monday, including questions over the administration of the fund and possible misuse of public money.
The fund was introduced to support qualifying South African-owned spaza shops with stock, business improvements and compliance costs following a series of foodborne illness incidents linked to informal retailers.
But the rollout has faced scrutiny after verification uncovered businesses that could not be traced and discrepancies over ownership and other requirements.
The minister is expected to give an update on applications processed and support provided so far.
