Niger has granted two major uranium mining permits to national companies, deepening its push to take greater control of the country’s strategic mineral resources.
The permits, approved by the government on 21 August, cover the In Azaoua and Madaouela I uranium projects in the Agadez region.
Teloua Safeguarding Uranium Mining Company (TSUMCO) received the In Azaoua permit after the nationalisation of SOMAÏR, previously operated by French nuclear company Orano.
Madaouela Mining Company (MAMICO) was awarded the Madaouela I permit, which returned to state ownership in 2024.
MAMICO will pay the government an initial $10 million royalty and has committed to creating about 1,000 jobs for young Nigeriens while prioritising local suppliers.
The move is part of Niger’s wider effort to increase state ownership and local participation in its uranium industry after years of foreign control.
